Friends of Orange County Schools is a diverse group of more than forty retired and active teachers, school administrators, former school board members, parents, community members and business leaders. Our group came together in the spring of 2021 over a number of common and growing education concerns, the most important among them - the declining academic performance of our students; the decreasing student enrollment due to families choosing alternatives to OCS; the increasing numbers of teachers choosing to leave our system (often leaving permanent substitutes in classrooms); a concern for student and teacher safety in the schools; and a lack of transparency and open communication with parents and other constituents.
We discovered through a focus group session held with a group of parents in the fall of 2021 that most participants felt that these problems were a result of board driven political agendas that resulted in ineffective and counterproductive governance decisions. These decisions contributed to division and a lack of trust among students, parents, teachers and administrators. We believe the board should be focused on making decisions that most directly fulfill its obligation to serve every student and support the teaching staff.
We determined that the best way to support our students, teachers and parents was to help highly qualified candidates get elected to the school board. We seek candidates who will most effectively further our mission of working to provide an education that prepares our students for life; supporting our teachers by bringing more resources into the classroom; ensuring safety in our schools by supporting the School Resource Officer Program; maintaining our buildings; and repairing trust by prioritizing transparency and open communication among all the stakeholders in our school system. We do not feel that these issues are currently receiving the attention that they deserve.
